ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST BEGINS FIRE RESTRICTIONS

Arcadia, CA...Annual fire restrictions go into effect for the Angeles National Forest, Wednesday, May 19, 1999 as the forest prepares for what could be a severe fire season, according to Michael J. Rogers, Forest Supervisor.

"Heavy rainfall of 'El Nino' helped to keep fire danger in check last summer, but produced an abundance of grass and brush-growth. This increase in vegetation coupled with the relatively dry winter, sets the stage for a very hazardous fire threat this summer," said Rogers. "We are asking the public's help in the fire prevention effort by recognizing and respecting the following restrictions."

Campfires are prohibited outside of developed camp and picnic grounds, except portable stoves using liquid petroleum gas (LPG) or equivalent are permitted with a valid campfire permit. Free campfire permits and copies of fire restrictions can be obtained at Forest Service Offices and Ranger Stations."

Use only fire rings, braziers, or stoves provided in developed camp and picnic grounds.

Smoke only at developed recreation sites, places of habitation, in a clearing not less than three feet in diameter, or in an enclosed vehicle.

Spark arresters are required (year-round) on off-road motorcycles and other off-road vehicles with a modified exhaust system.

Fireworks are prohibited on all National Forests in Southern California.

Fire officials stress the point that a severe fire threat could develop as the hot and dry summer progresses. Fire restrictions are for the safety of the public as well as the protection of forest resources.

"We ask all visitors to the forest to honor the fire restrictions so that the public may have a fire safe and pleasant experience," added Rogers.
